I think that Lapland in Finland is pretty high on must travel blogger bucket list because of all the incredible igloo hotels, northern light, and beautiful wilderness – at least that’s how it’s been for me.
But since I don’t travel by airplane, for environmental reasons, Lapland is not just around the corner from Copenhagen and therefore it has seemed pretty far away. Lapland is the same distance from Copenhagen as from Copenhagen to Barcelona.
But luckily Michelin, who I’m an ambassador for, had an event this late winter in Ivalo, Lapland. A perfect reason to finally make an adventure to Lapland, the northernmost region in Finland.
I booked myself a 1′ Class ticket on the night train from Copenhagen to Luleå and rented a car from there. A car drive from Luleå in Sweden to Rovaniemi in Finland is only about 3 hours.
I highly recommend renting a car whenever visiting Lapland. The region is bigger than the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland combined! But only 175.000 people live in this region and they are spread all over. Therefore, rent a car and get a magnificent road trip out of it.
Obviously, I didn’t sleep at all hotels in Lapland but I did hundreds of hours of research and I’ve stayed at the places I believe are good value for money, a great location, or a unique experience.
I will be quite frank and say that what you spend the most money on while traveling around Lapland will be the hotels. There aren’t many of them, they are often luxurious and more expensive than what you normally pay for a hotel room. However, it’s possible to get an excellent arctic meal at a great restaurant for reasonable money.

Arctic Light Hotel
This family-owned award-winning boutique hotel, Arctic Light Hotel, is located in the city center of Rovaniemi, which is also the capital of Lapland.
It used to be the old town hall in this city, but the family bought the building and renovated it a few years ago. There are 57 rooms in this hotel, all decorated in different styles and you can book a normal double room as well as a beautiful suite with a jacuzzi, sauna, and private balcony.
At the hotel, you’ll also find what might be the best restaurant in all of Rovaniemi. At least it’s from what I discovered the most authentic Lappish restaurant in this city. Rovaniemi is earning most of its money from tourists which isn’t hard to tell when reaching the city but at Arctic Light Hotel you feel at home. The ambiance is good and lots of local staff work at the place along with most of the family that owns the place.

Finnish Lapland actually is really large area. The size is more than 100 thousand square meters, which means that Lapland almost covers one third of Finland’s total area of 338.44 thousand square kilometers. The area is bigger than the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland combined. There are 21 municipalities in total in Lapland.
Only about 178 thousand people live in Finnish Lapland. This is only about 3.4% of the total population of Finland. Funny fact is that there actually are more reindeers than people in Finnish Lapland. The reindeer population in Lapland is about 200 thousand.
Northern Light (Aurora Borealis) is one of the main reason a lot of people seek into the wilderness of Lapland.
The best season to catch a glimpse of the dancing light is between September and March.
