In this blog post, I would like to share with you which kind of gear we use to take and make our content.
I am one of the biggest gear and gadgets freaks which is why it has been really dangerous going more professional with the camera hobby for our travel blog, since the gear and camera equipment keeps changing and improving, which means it can become attempt.

A clever person once told me: “it is not about having expensive equipment it is about knowing how to use your equipment”.

Since we are traveling a lot I need gear that works well for both photography and videography, since space in a suitcase is always an issue while traveling. It has taken me years and several atempt with different cameras, bags, lenses, gear, gadgets etc. before I could settle with what I have now.

Canon EOS R

The newest mirrorless camera from Canon that just came out in September 2018.
It has everything I needed that my previous Canon cameras such as the 5D mark ii and  6D mark II did not possess.
My main struggle with the previous cameras I had was when it came down to the video possibilities which was my great new passion along with photography.

Due to the amount of lenses I had I didn’t wanted change to Sony as a lot of other did and I could not effort the 1Dx Mark ii. So when the Canon EOS R came out I was more than excited!
Besides the dreamy design, lower weight and smaller body it has some great new features and has kept all the best from the Canon 5D mark IV at least for my purposes.

Example of a video I have made with the Canon Eos R
Timelaps with Canon Eos R 4k
  • 30.3 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 5,655 selectable AF points
  • ISO range: 100 – 40,000 expandable to 50 – 102,400
  • Up to 8fps continuous shooting rate; 5fps with Servo AF
  • 4K UHD video at up to 30fps at 480Mbps
  • HD video: 1080p60 & 720p120
  • 4K timelaps
  • New RF lens mount.

These features are everything I need to complete the amount of work I am doing on our travel blog.

Price: 2.299 USD / 2.019 EUR

Canon 50mm 1.2

Main use: Portrait, street, and details.
Due to the extremely high aperture on 1.2 this lens is perfect for pictures with amazing depth of field and creating bokeh.
To begin with, I mainly used it for portraits but the last couple of month it has pretty much stayed on my camera as my standard lens.

Price: 1.269 USD / 1.114 EUR

Canon 180mm 3.5 Macro

Main use: Macro and portraits
This lens is mainly designed for a macro which works beautifully with this lens, but I also discovered that since I don’t have a 70-200mm lens for objects further away, that this lens is actually quite stabilities and can take beautiful pictures from distance. It has the same glass as the 85mm 1.2 and therefor taking portraits with this lens also works without a problem.
The only disadvantage is that it is a bit big to carry around.

Price: 1.399 USD / 1.228 EUR

Canon EF 24–105mm f/4L is II USM

This is the most standard lens of all time and it came along with the previous camera I bought.
Main use: Videography & city trips
It has a marvelous image stabilization that works great when I don’t have the gimbal and I need to shoot a steady or walk frequency of a movie.
The quality for pictures is also great compared to the price and this lens work perfectly as a “tour lens” if you don’t wish to carry around different lenses.

Price: 1.099 USD / 965 EUR

Zhiyun Crane 2

Without this gimbal I wouldn’t have been able to create all the smooth movement in the videos we do.

This item simply brings up the quality of our work so much – especially the scenes of walking behind Karoline of entering a flair spot such as the video clips you can see below.

Price: 549 USD / 482 EUR

Kingjue Tripod

A must for a photographer or videographer is to have a solid tripod and my experience is that there is not one specific tripod that works the best – it is about finding one that suits your needs and this is one of the items you can spend a lot of money on without the big difference in the quality in my opinion. I have the bigger brother to this model but this was the first tripod I used for traveling and it suits my need more than enough!

What is the purpose of a tripod? To keep your gear steady while you are shooting a video or shooting with long exposure such as sunrise or sunset.
If you are traveling around you dont want another 3-4kg on your shoulders which I why I would recommend a tripod that will suit your needs and is comfortable traveling with. If you are going hiking in mountains with strong winds and bad conditions you might consider getting a heavier one – but for everything else, this will do fine!

Price: 59 USD / 51,82 Euro

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Drone

Without a doubt one of the best investment I have done. It take the quality of a project as a video from a standard level to a way more professional league.
This drone is easy to carry around anywhere, does not weight a lot and has all the features you need such as:

  • 4K resolution
  • RAW format photos
  • Portrait mode
  • 7km video transmission
  • 30 min flight time
  • Object avoidance
  • Follow/track motion
  • Bazooka
  • Selfie mode
  • Noise reduction

Price: 1.200 USD / 1.000 EUR

Drone Filters

The camera on the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum is amazing but often we like to shoot settings around sunrise or sunset, blue water or white beaches and for this purpose you need to invest in pol/ND filters as you have for your cameras.
This package was affordable with several possibilities and the results are great.

Price: 50 USD / 35 EUR

F-STOP CAMERA BAG

It is important to be able to carry around your gear in a comfortable and practical way, especially for longer trips where walking is required.

It took me several attempts before I became completely satisfied and that was with the F-Stop bags.

Their ICU-system allows you to easily pack or repack your gear in the most convenient way and to swap it from one bag to another, which is why I have the big 80L Shinn Bag but also the 25L Guru bag.
I use the Shinn bag for traveling longer trips as my check in luggage for example, while my 25L is my carry on in the airplane since its perfect for your camera body and 2-3 lenses plus all of the batteries that you obviously need to bring as carry on, otherwise they will get confiscated from your check in luggage.
When arriving at my destination I use the 25L Guru bag as my daily rug-sack that I use for day hikes. You can also easily attach your gimbal or tripod to the side of the bag.

Model: 80L Shinn Bag
Price: 300 USD / 280EUR

Lee filter

A simple accessories that can make your simple pictures go from a normal mobile phone capture to a much more professionel look is the filters for your camera.
I decided to go with the LEE filter system because of the easy possibility of changing the filters and mounting to different lenses.
I have tried several different alternatives before I decided to stick with the LEE filters.
It takes time to learn about the different stops and how to use and count the stops. This is a simple guide that hopefully will help you but be aware that you need a mount that fits your camera lens like 77mm for example.
